Carolyn Barker, Latent Print Committee

Carolyn Barker started her law enforcement career in the mid-1960’s as a Records Clerk for the Brevard County, FL, Sheriff's Department . She learned to file ten-print cards using the Henry system and worked for 11 years as a Ten-print Examiner and Assistant Supervisor of records.

In 1975, Carolyn moved to Colorado, where she trained as a Latent Print Examiner under Doug od Police Department. After a two year training program, she worked another year before the IAI’s Latent Print Certification program began and has been a Certified Latent Print Examiner since 1978. Carolyn worked for the Lakewood Police Department for 30 years.

Since leaving Lakewood, Carolyn has worked in the Identification section of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and is now working part-time with the Aurora Police Department.

Carolyn has been a member of the RMDIAI and the IAI since 1975. She is also a past member of the British Fingerprint Society and the Florida Division IAI. She is a past Editor for the RMDIAI newsletter from 1988 until 1991. In 1988, she became a member of the Latent Print Certification Committee and has served as Chairman of the committee since 1993 . She also served six years on the Latent Print Certification Board for the IAI. Carolyn encourages all latent print examiners out there to take the test and become a Certified Latent Print Examiner, as she has told many applicants over the years, “You can do it.”

Wayne Bryant, Latent Print Committee

Wayne Bryant was recently recognized for twenty-three years of service to the RMDIAI and the Latent Print Certification Committee.

President Brenda Harris presented the plaque to Wayne on March 4, 2010, at the Denver Police Academy.

Wayne began his law enforcement career in 1966 as a patrol officer with the Adams County Sheriffs Department. He eventually worked as an investigator and patrol sergeant before going to work in the crime lab. He began working in latent prints in the early 1970’s. He went to work for the Aurora Police Department in 1974. In 1980, he went to work for CBI, where he has worked in the areas of crime scene investigation, latent prints, footwear and tire tread examination, and firearms examination. Wayne currently works for CBI in Montrose, but expects to retire this summer.

He and his wife, Beverly, enjoy rock-hounding, hiking, gardening, and photography. Wayne has a collection of antique cameras and photography equipment and would be interested in hearing from anyone who has any old laboratory or crime scene equipment (particularly a stereo microscope and
fingerprint magnifiers) they would be willing to part with.

The title for this newsletter, “The Silent Witness”, can be credited to Wayne after he submitted the title in a contest to name the RMDIAI newsletter.

Wayne was surprised to receive the recognition and is modest about his contributions to the RMDIAI.  Thank you Wayne for all your years of service to the RMDIAI!
