The RMDIAI formed the Body Identification Team in late 1976, after the Big Thompson flood. The team is comprised of various certified forensic identification and death investigation specialists from around the state of Colorado and New Mexico. The members do not receive compensation, except from their respective law enforcement agency. Some of the members donate their time from private practice. The coroner/agency with the disaster is always in charge of the scene and the investigative process. The Body Identification Team wants no contact with the media and normally would not be at the scene of the disaster unless the coroner/agency requests assistance with body recovery. The primary purpose is to assist the coroner/agency in the positive identification of the bodies. Previous disasters involving the Body ID Team:
