Workshop Information

Beyond the Basics: Advanced Fingerprint Development Techniques (lead by Sharon Plotkin)- 30 student limit
The purpose of this all-day workshop is to provide participants with advanced, practical techniques for developing and enhancing latent fingerprints on a variety of evidence types and surfaces. Through in-depth instruction and hands-on application, attendees will strengthen their ability to select appropriate processing methods, improve print quality, and maximize the recovery of valuable fingerprint evidence. Fingerprint development techniques will include fluorescence powders, Ninhydrin, fuming, Indandione, Small Particle Reagent, Wet Wop, Hungarian Red, DFO, and more.
At the completion of this all-day workshop, By the end of the Beyond the Basics: Advanced Fingerprint Development Techniques workshop, participants will strengthen their ability to select, apply, and evaluate advanced fingerprint development methods for a variety of evidence types and crime scene conditions, improving the visualization, preservation, and recovery of latent fingerprint evidence.

This workshop will be taught by a certified crime scene expert.

Basic Bloodstain (lead by Paige Green-Purba, Liz Anderson, Sydney Stansbury, Crystal Stowell, and Chandra Thurston)- 12 student limit
This workshop is intended for entry-level crime scene investigators seeking training in bloodstain pattern identification. Participants will be instructed on the basic properties of blood, the mechanisms by which bloodstain patterns are formed, and the definitions and distinguishing characteristics of various pattern types. The program also includes practical components, allowing participants to apply their knowledge by creating various bloodstain patterns and evaluating and classifying bloodstain patterns within a simulated crime scene scenario.

*This workshop has been approved by the IAI for 4 hours of training credit toward Crime Scene Certification.

Beyond the Stain: Integrating Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Scene Interpretation, and Reconstruction (lead by Heather Hatfield-Schlenker and Doug Young)- 20 student limit
Beyond the Stain: Evidence Relationships, Event Sequencing, and Defensible Reconstruction is an interactive course focused on using bloodstain patterns and physical evidence to reconstruct events within a crime scene. Participants will work through a case to identify significant evidence, evaluate relationships between findings, sequence events, and develop evidence-supported conclusions. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing observation from interpretation, recognizing limitations and alternative explanations, and clearly articulating and defending reconstruction conclusions.

*This workshop has been approved by the IAI for 4 hours of training credit toward Crime Scene Certification.

Revealing the Invisible (lead by Scott Miller Vargas)- 24 student limit
Crime Scene Investigators are tasked with the critical responsibility of recognizing, locating, preserving, and documenting evidence at crime scenes, including evidence that may be latent, microscopic, or otherwise imperceptible to the naked eye. The effective use of presumptive chemical testing, alternate light sources, and specialized photographic techniques is essential for the detection and documentation of such evidence for investigative and judicial purposes.
This workshop is designed to provide attendees with a foundational understanding of specialized crime scene photography and evidence enhancement techniques commonly used in forensic investigations. Participants will be introduced to a variety of search and enhancement methods used to visualize and document evidence that may be difficult or impossible to observe under normal lighting conditions.
Hands-on instruction will include the application and photographic documentation of enhancement techniques utilizing chemicals such as Bluestar, Leuco Crystal Violet, and Small Particle Reagent, in conjunction with alternate light source technology. Attendees will gain practical experience in locating, enhancing, and properly documenting evidence through specialized photographic methods to ensure accurate preservation for analysis, reporting, and courtroom presentation.

*Attendees must bring their own camera and tripod.
*This workshop has been approved by the IAI for 4 hours of training credit towards Crime Scene Certification/Recertification and Forensic Photography and Digital Imaging Certification/ Recertification.

The Collection of Footwear Impressions (lead by Sheri Shimamoto and Liz Anderson) 10 student limit
This workshop is intended for entry-level crime scene investigators seeking foundational training in impression evidence recovery. Emphasis will be placed on the forensic value of footwear impressions, which are frequently underutilized despite their evidentiary potential. Participants will receive instruction in the proper documentation and recovery of three-dimensional impressions through photographic techniques and casting methods in substrates such as soil and mud, including dry casting in aqueous environments. The course will also cover post-recovery procedures, including cleaning and photographing casts, as well as techniques for locating, enhancing, photographing, and lifting two-dimensional impressions from non-porous surfaces.

*This workshop has been approved by the IAI for 4 hours of training credit toward Crime Scene Certification.

Low Light Photography Workshop (lead by Erick Bryant)
This advanced course trains forensic investigators to capture high-quality, legally admissible evidence in low-light, dark, and nighttime environments. Students will master manual exposure manipulation, advanced focusing techniques, specialized light sources, and light-painting workflows. The curriculum transitions from core optical physics to four critical scenarios: outdoor night scenes, Alternative Light Source (ALS) documentation. Bluestar chemical enhancement, and laser trajectory visualization.

*This workshop is not approved by the IAI for training credit towards certification/ recertification .
